Beto has been writing open-source software for more than 2 decades, with open-source serving as the unifying theme across their diverse career. This includes their work as a climate scientist with a PhD in oceanography running global simulations for the IPCC, as an instructor and speaker at Facebook/Meta passionate about data tools and best practices, as a software engineer working daily on Apache Superset, and as a musician using open hardware and open-source plugins to compose and produce their songs.

The tools and libraries that Beto has created or worked on are used daily by thousands of companies and countless users, focusing on making data access seamless and switching the spotlight to the user experience instead. Their first big project was Pydap, a server for climate data developed during the Google Summer of Code in 2005. Pydap was used by the IPCC to distribute their simulations when they won their 2007 Nobel Prize, and also by the Danish Navy when removing chemical weapons from Syria.

Since 2017, Beto has been working daily on Apache Superset, a modern and modular business intelligence web application that is the number 1 Apache project in terms of GitHub stars. This work has led to the creation of an ecosystem of products: DataJunction, a semantic layer that has been adopted by data teams at Netflix; Shillelagh, a Python library that makes any kind of data easily queryable via SQL; and Cantrip, a magical semantic layer that lives in the database itself, requiring no additional resources. Sophie Kempston (she/they) is a current PhD candidate in the School for Cross-Faculty Studies at the University of Warwick. Her research focuses on measuring the sustainability impacts of the increase of demand for critical raw materials as a result of the UK's increasing demand for electric vehicles. This includes forecasting scenarios for electric vehicle uptake and battery market shares in the UK, and developing a framework to assess the holistic sustainability impacts of these scenarios. They are also a Graduate Teaching Assistant in the School for Cross-Faculty Studies at their University and are kindly funded by the Leverhulme Trust through the TRANSFORM Doctoral Programme.

Astrid is Head of Public Sector and Sustainability at Techbuyer, which specialises in sustainable solutions for Enterprise IT hardware. She is a Chartered Environmentalist and full member of the Institute of Environmental Management and Assessment (IEMA). Astrid has co-authored a number of academic papers on circular economy and energy efficiency in the IT sector and also lead the development of the Sustainability Best Practice whitepaper for the UK data centre sector through the DCA. Dr. Haidy Mahmoud Shehata is an Assistant Professor at the Faculty of Engineering, Pharos University in Alexandria, specializing in Architectural Engineering, Sustainable Design, Smart Cities, and Artificial Intelligence-driven solutions for sustainable development. She holds a PhD in Architectural Engineering from Alexandria University, with research focusing on Fifth Generation Smart Cities and strategies for sustainable urban transformation.

Her research interests encompass smart cities, sustainability, environmental design, energy-efficient buildings, human-centered design, and the integration of AI and emerging technologies within the built environment. She has contributed to scientific publications, international conferences, peer reviewing, training, and interdisciplinary sustainability initiatives.

Dr. Shehata serves as THE Impact Rankings Coordinator at Pharos University in Alexandria and Coordinator of Community Service and Sustainability Center at the Faculty of Engineering. Adam is the Director of Sustainability and Building Services at SSM Healthcare, a healthcare system consisting of 23 hospitals and over 600 medical facilities across Missouri, Illinois, Oklahoma, and Wisconsin. Adam is responsible for various environmental sustainability initiatives, including reducing SSM Health’s carbon footprint to Net Zero by 2050. Adam holds a degree in Architectural Sustainability from Boston Architectural College, where he completed an award-winning thesis on “How Cultural Sustainability helps to overcome marginalization and gentrification.” Adam is currently pursuing his MBA w/emphasis in Leadership, from Lindenwood University in St. Charles, MO. Adam is also passionate about serving the communities where he lives and works. He actively volunteers with various youth groups, mentoring them in the design industry and professional development.
