I am a molecular biologist/computational biologist who stumbled upon a data analyst role. I wear three hats at work: I teach data science, genomics and evolution to undergraduates; I study patterns of genetic variation in small mammals to learn about their evolution and demography; I analyse and report on students' educational outcomes and factors that contribute to differential attainment of various groups of students across the entire institution. I also like to cycle.

I have been using Rust full-time since 2017 to design software that makes predictions for the Large Hadron Collider at CERN. During my PhD and 5-year postdoc at ETH, I designed computer algebra programs that can handle massive computations involving expressions with millions of terms that can easily take up a terabyte of memory. This specialized software is based on programs from the 1990s, which are hard to use, and very hard to maintain.

At the end of 2022, I decided to design a new computer algebra package from scratch in Rust that is both easy to use and is blazing fast: Symbolica.

Carol Tinga

Carol Tinga

Carol is a PhD candidate in the Department of Population Medicine at the Ontario Veterinary College (OVC) at the University of Guelph, Canada. Her research focuses on the owner-companion rabbit relationship, and companion rabbit care and welfare. Specifically, she is exploring the validity and reliability of established human-animal relationship scales for use with companion rabbit owners, rabbit owners’ favourite rabbit behaviours and why they are so, ownership challenges, risk factors for thoughts of giving rabbits away or letting them loose outside, and rabbit intakes and management practices at Canadian and American shelters and rabbit rescues. This research was inspired by Vespa, an extraordinary, lop-eared rabbit.

Prior to the PhD program, Carol completed a Masters in Population Medicine at the OVC where her research focused on veterinary technical and professional skills in student veterinarians and recent graduates. She currently shares her home with a bonded pair of free-range, up-eared rabbits, Ellie and Coco. The duo, affectionately known as “the hooligans,” came to her from a foster family who took them in after they had been turned loose outside by their previous owners.
