Justin Paluku is an IT Specialist and currently taking the MIT MacroMasters Data science course. Justin was born in May 1991, in Butembo, eastern part of the Democratic Republic of Congo where he was forced to flee to Uganda in 2012 looking for safety.

To support refugee and low income communities to access quality education and advanced technology in Africa, Justin has founded an organisation named Up With Africa based in Uganda.

About his work engagement, Justin has worked as a Research Enumerator with the University of Oxford - Refugee Study Center on a Refugee Economy Study in Uganda in 2018, where he successfully conducted interviews with 123 adult refugees from different slums and households.

Justin has also worked on many projects with the University of Toronto (for 6 years) in Uganda such as: refugees reproductive health, stress management and Virtual Reality as an mental health intervention, managing communication from online systems to refugees' WhatsApp massaging as part of the study.

Additionally, Justin has worked in refugee settlements in Uganda like Nakivale, Kyaka II, Bidibidi and Kiryandongo where he supported the creation of ICT, Entrepreneurship and Conflicts Resolution online course contents for refugees to learn remotely.

Dr. Patricia Espinoza Fernandez

Dr. Patricia Espinoza Fernandez

Dr. Fernandez is currently the Student Support Services Director for the Lakeside Union School District and a Lecturer in the Department of Dual Language and English Learner Education at San Diego State University. She is a former public school administrator and classroom teacher.

She maintains an active professional life overseeing her school's district school safety, student well-being, connectedness, attendance and overall student support programs. She is the foster youth and McKinney-Vento liaison for her district, working closely with the department of child and family wellbeing and the county office of education. She is liaison to students whose parent or guardian offers active duty service to any military branch.

Her passion in service of children and youth to improve systems of support, remove potential barriers and help anyone who is experiencing barriers to school success stems from her desire to improve educational outcomes for all. Being an educator contributes to both her personal and professional growth. She finds volunteering time in the county of San Diego gratifying and gives one hundred percent to any task she undertakes. She builds upon the connections she makes through community engagement, developing and maintaining key relationships in the community with civic leaders, community partners and professionals looking for opportunities to bring educational resources to her school district in support of students, staff and families.

Patricia is a native Angeleno with deep roots in the Mexican-American community. She grew up on the east side of Los Angeles. After graduating Roosevelt High School, she attended San Diego State University where as a first-generation graduate she received a Bachelor of Arts in Liberal Studies with an emphasis in Multicultural Education, a Master of Arts in Education with an emphasis in Educational Leadership, and a Doctorate in Educational Leadership. Her doctoral work is in the area of dual language immersion equity, access and K-12 leadership.

Dr. Fernandez is passionate about collaborating with educational partners to ensure youth have access to school supports and transition to high school with an achievable plan for success in college or trade school, military service, or direct entry to the world of work. During her tenure as director, Lakeside Union School District continues to gradually increase positive student attendance districtwide; she oversees the implementation of school safety initiatives including safety meetings that engage key community leaders and site administrators; health education programming, including youth mental health. as well as systems that maintain and promote campus safety.

Dr. Fernandez was appointed by the San Diego County Board of Supervisors to a advisory board member role to the San Diego County Child & Family Strengthening Unit. Also she is a non-profit volunteer member of MANA de San Diego where she is leads on the Tías Leadership Committee and co-leads a summer college success institute for first-generation San Diego County Latina college students. She currently is a member of ACSA Region 18 and CALSA Region 6, supporting legislative advocacy efforts at the regional and state level on behalf of the students and educators in San Diego and Imperial Counties. Dr. Jackie Grant taught biology and environmental science at Southern Utah University for 12 years before joining Grand Staircase Escalante Partners in 2024. During that time she established science-based partnerships with Federal land management agencies such as the Bureau of Land Management, National Park Service, Fish and Wildlife Service, and National Forest Service. This activism influenced over 15 years of social services experience at national and local levels. Charisma has spearheaded multiple county-wide initiatives and is recognized for her advocacy and dedication to children, in addition to her efforts to develop cross-system procedures for collaboration & coordination among child-serving systems. Manuel Dolderer is an economist and an edupreneur. He is co-founder and founding president of CODE, a university of applied sciences with study programs related to digital product development and an innovative learning concept based on curiosity and entrepreneurship.

Manuel studied economics, philosophy and cultural studies at Germany’s oldest private University in Witten/Herdecke. As a student, he joined the executive board of the StudierendenGesellschaft, a non-profit organization offering an income-adjusted tuition model that promotes equal opportunities in education.

After founding two applied research institutes with projects focussing on healthcare, education, and digitalization he joined Klett Group in 2012, one of Europe’s leading education-dedicated enterprises, where he became co-founder and managing director of praxisHochschule, a private university of applied sciences that has since become part of EUFH.

In 2016 he joined forces with Thomas Bachem and Jonathan Rüth to found CODE – a new kind of university for the digital pioneers of tomorrow.

Sara Shunkwiler is an instructional designer at Johns Hopkins University Whiting School of Engineering where she works with over 45 instructors in the Space Systems Engineering Program. She is also an Adjunct Faculty at JHU School of Education where teaches chemistry and physics content and methods to educators with a focus on Universal Design for Learning (UDL) as a social justice tool. She is a passionate advocate for STEM equity and effective engineering education and frequent speaker on why accessibility matters to all of us.

A disabled engineer, K-12 and Higher Ed STEM educator, Sara seeks to raise awareness of disability as a valued form of diversity and the challenges of disability disclosure. She is a 2024 Teach Access Fellow and frequent presenter on equitable access in STEM, math accessibility, and inclusive teaching. Challenged by another engineering faculty to own her disability story, she seeks to be a role model empowering STEM colleagues and students as advocates and allies in disability inclusion. Sarah Withee

Sarah Withee is a polyglot software engineer, international public speaker, teacher, mentor, and hardware and robot tinkerer located in Pittsburgh, PA. She is passionate about the intersection of technology and people. Presently she is the head of backend development for CODE PA, a new government office located within Pennsylvania to help improve the digital services of the state. She was formerly at 18F, a federal office doing digital transformation work around the federal government, and many private industry jobs before that.

As a polyglot (multiple-language) developer, she has worked in a wide range of tech stacks and has built desktop, mobile, web, and backend applications. She is also one of the organizers of Code & Supply, Pittsburgh's largest technology community. She is currently a lead mentor for Girls of Steel Robotics, an all-girls high school robotics team, which just got back from the world championships. She has been mentoring and judging FIRST competition teams since 2011.

Sarah has given over 70 software engineering conference talks, been a guest on nearly two dozen podcasts, has been interviewed for Teen Vogue and Reinvented Magazine, and even appeared on a Google Year in Search video!
